A Braces-Friendly Thanksgiving: Foods To Avoid With Braces

At Lakewood Dental Arts, we’ve made it our mission to provide orthodontic treatments, such as braces and Invisalign, that are of the highest quality for people of all ages in and around Lakewood, CA. As your trusted dental and orthodontic expert, it is our mission to help you achieve your dream smile! However, although the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday includes some of the most wonderful foods of the year, it also proves a tricky time for those with braces. Here at Lakewood Dental Arts, we aim to avoid you or your child feeling alienated as a result of the limited braces-safe menu options, thus we created this blog to give braces-friendly food ideas to incorporate into your holiday feast!

Main Course Dishes

  1. Foods with bones are hard on mouth hardware as they require excess force for your jaw to pull the meat off the bone. Save the bones for someone without braces and put boneless meat on your or your child’s plate! You may also remove the meat from the bone with a knife if you prefer boned meat. The important thing is to avoid gnawing on bones of any kind—including pork bones, chicken bones, ham bones, steak bones, etc.

  2. Avoid any crunchy food.  This means avoiding any salads with nuts or any other crunchy foods.

  3. Corn.  Corn can be eaten, but only if it’s cut off the cob.

  4. Be cautious with meats.  It’s okay to eat meats with braces, but make sure the meat is cut into small pieces.

  5. Desserts: be sure to avoid desserts that are sticky or chewy as they can pull the hardware off your teeth!
