In addition to general, cosmetic and restorative dentistry, our Lakewood, CA dentists at Lakewood Dental Arts also provide treatment for patients who suffer from snoring and obstructive sleep apnea, or OSA. Do you snore loudly or wake up breathless in the middle of the night? Are you tired and drowsy during the day for no reason? If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, you may benefit from the sleep apnea and snoring treatments we offer.

How Do I Know if I Have Sleep Apnea?

There are many different symptoms that can indicate the presence of sleep apnea. These symptoms include:

  • Insomnia or difficulty sleeping
  • Loud snoring at night
  • Waking up at night short of breath
  • Snorting or choking sounds during the night (indicating a restart of breathing)
  • Headaches upon waking in the morning
  • Falling asleep unintentionally during the day
  • Extreme drowsiness throughout the day

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, contact our office. We might recommend that you undergo a personal sleep study to help see if you are a candidate for treatment. At Lakewood Dental Arts, we work with REM Sleep Labs for diagnostic testing of sleep disorders.

What Does A Sleep Study Entail?

At REM Sleep Labs, you will be given a polysomnogram, or sleep study, in order to assess the extent of the sleep problem you are dealing with. This is a test that monitors the sleeping habits of an individual to ascertain if there are irregularities such as:

  • Sleep related breathing disorders, such as sleep apnea
  • Periodic limb movement disorder
  • Narcolepsy
  • REM disorder
  • Insomnia

A sleep study such as this is the only way to diagnose OSA. Once diagnosed, there are several types of sleep apnea and snoring aides and treatment that can offer patients a clear and open airway during sleep.

What Kinds Of Treatments Can Help With Sleep Apnea?

For some people, simple changes to the daily lifestyle like losing weight, developing better sleeping habits, avoiding alcohol or sleep medications at bedtime can cure and prevent OSA. However, other people might require the use of an oral appliance such as a snore guard.

Here at Lakewood Dental Arts, we will work with REM Sleep Labs to determine the best course of action to help cure your OSA. Our custom snore guards are similar to athletic mouth guards, but are worn while sleeping. They hold the lower jaw in a forward position to prevent it from falling open in the middle of the night, causing the airway to become blocked. The snore guard will create and maintain a clear airway to reduce snoring, improve breathing and reduce the health risks associated with sleep apnea.
