How Do I Know if I Have Sleep Apnea?

Obstructive sleep apnea and snoring problems are very difficult to identify, since they cause the most issues when you’re asleep. If you don’t have a partner that can tell you that you snore, there are many different symptoms that can indicate the presence of sleep apnea. These symptoms include:

  • Insomnia Or Difficulty Sleeping

  • Loud Snoring At Night

  • Waking Up At Night Short Of Breath

  • Snorting Or Choking Sounds During The Night (Indicating A Restart Of Breathing)

  • Headaches Upon Waking In The Morning

  • Falling Asleep Unintentionally During The Day

  • Extreme Drowsiness Throughout The Day

If you notice that you have any of these symptoms, give us a call here at Lakewood Dental Arts for a consultation. We might recommend that you undergo a personal sleep study to help see if you are a candidate for treatment. At Lakewood Dental Arts, we partner with REM Sleep Labs for diagnostic testing of sleep disorders.

What Is A Sleep Study & What Will It Do For Me?

If we refer you to REM Sleep Labs, you will meet with their team to undergo a sleep study, also called a polysomnogram. This test is designed to monitor your sleep habits to pick out any irregularities, assessing the extent of your sleep apnea or snoring problem. The irregularities that will be examined include:

  • Sleep Related Breathing Disorders, Such As Sleep Apnea

  • Periodic Limb Movement Disorder

  • Narcolepsy

  • Rem Disorder

  • Insomnia

A sleep study such as this is the only way to diagnose OSA. Once diagnosed, there are several types of sleep apnea and snoring aids and treatment that can offer patients a clear and open airway during sleep.

What Kinds Of Treatments Can Help With Sleep Apnea?

There are many different options for treatment of sleep apnea, but the best method will vary on a case to case basis.  For some, simple changes to the daily lifestyle like losing weight, developing better sleeping habits, avoiding alcohol or sleep medications at bedtime can cure and prevent OSA. If these changes prove to be ineffective, the patient might require the use of an oral appliance such as a snore guard provided by a dentist.

A snore guard is similar to an athletic mouth guard, which you will wear while you sleep. The appliance is designed to hold the lower jaw in a forward position to prevent it from falling open in the middle of the night, since this would block your airway and make it more difficult to breath. By keeping your airway open, you will have improved breathing, reduced snoring, and less health risks associated with sleep apnea. Here at Lakewood Dental Arts, we create custom snore guards that are designed to fit comfortably, so you can get the perfect night of sleep.
