What Is Oral Surgery?

Speaking generally, oral surgery applies to any surgical procedure affecting the mouth, but oral surgery may be used to treat a variety of dental and orthodontic problems affecting the mouth, teeth, and jaw. Oral surgery may be performed under local anesthesia, as is the case for minor procedures like tooth extraction, or it may be performed under general anesthesia, which we use for more extensive oral surgeries. As a comprehensive dental practice, we offer a variety of oral surgery procedures, including:

  • Dental Implants
  • TMJ/TMD Therapy (jaw pain therapy)
  • Orthognathic Surgery (corrective jaw surgery)
  • Bone Grafting
  • Tooth Extraction

While not everyone needs oral surgery, for some patients, it's a vital part of achieving a better smile. Your dentist will work with you to decide if oral surgery is right for you.

How to Prepare for Oral Surgery

Preparing for oral surgery is relatively simple, and will depend on the specific procedure you're getting. For some procedures, you may not be able to drive home afterwards due to the anesthesia, so be sure to arrange for a ride to and from your surgical appointment. You may also need to fast for a certain period before the surgery to ensure your anesthetic works as normal, and we may also prescribe certain medications before or after your surgery. Your Lakewood dentist will talk with you to ensure you understand everything you need to do pre and post surgery.

Recovering from Oral Surgery

Recovery periods after oral surgery are generally mild. You may experience swelling for the first couple days after the surgery, but this should recede within 48 hours or so. We recommend patients rest during this period and avoid any strenuous activities. For more extensive surgeries, the recovery period may be longer. For example, wisdom tooth extraction is a relatively simple procedure that should heal after about 2 weeks, but jaw surgery can take up to 2-3 months to heal. Your doctor will talk with you to help you understand your procedure and know what to expect.
